Valerie Staats

Valerie Staats, Ph.D., is Executive Director of the International Book Bank in Baltimore, Maryland, and has also been Executive Director of three other non-profits, the Audubon Society in Austin, Texas, and the European Union Studies Association and Pittsburgh Cares, both in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Valarie was a national fundraiser for the American Friends Service Committee (Quakers) and a delegate to the NGO Forum of the UN's 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing. She holds a Ph.D. in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. in Literature from the University of Iowa. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, where she trained Moroccan secondary teachers, and has also studied or worked in France, Spain, and Guatemala. Valerie is a proud Big Sister of 10 years' standing in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and believes deeply in the transformative power of one-to-one contact between people of different cultures.
